Keis, Corvettes and Cappuccinos

We discuss what it takes to bring in a car to the USA that is not already sold here by the manufacturer. What if you want to bring in that Lada, Nissan Skyline, Porsche 959, Honda Acty or Suzuki Cappuccino into the the USA? Is it better to order up a new one, get a used one or get an “antique” one? Can you do this yourself or should you get a broker? What legal stipulations must one follow to get it through customs? Does it take Bill Gates levels of money to do this?

In our trivia question, we find out what was the only year without a Corvette?

Misty admits to being late, but the test came back negative…

Dave sounds phlegmish and has BeeGees in his carburetors. Do you really need those BG services that dealers offer? Should you kiss your mechanic? Misty rants about Dutch Mazda dealers. Tim’s rental car REALLY wants him to BRAKE!!! And just what the heck does Escalade mean anyway?

Dave has a special challenge for us because he missed us all horribly and trivia asks us when the rumble seat last graced us with its presence.

Dave threw down the gauntlet asking the gang to put together their very own roadtrip movie! Each submission would be scored on:

  1. The car and why that car
  2. The trip – Starting point, route, and destination
  3. The co-star and why?
  4. What’s the point of this trip?
  5. Bonus – unexpected plot twist

Ben leads off with 2 questionable (according to him) submissions. First he brings a 007-ish satire comedy through the US and follows up with a coming of age roadtrip through the US. Dawn had a slight misunderstanding, so showing her amazing ability to pivot, gives us an off the cuff Porsche flavored spy/romance cliffhanger beginning with a high school reunion based in Europe. Mickey wrestled for a WHOLE 36 hours to deliver a Miami to LA race with a very special twist. Misty draws on her love for Egypt, Brendan Fraser, and The Mummy for an epic drive from Europe to Cairo with a brief segue into why The Mummy is a true love story for the ages, followed up with a book review about women and data bias.

Who won? Listen and find out!!

We take a strange turn into cyberpunk/steampunk DnD with a cyborg Henry Ford before finally finding out which auto was the last to have a rumble seat. And a delightful time was had by all.

Marketing / Social Media Intern

The Thing About Cars is a talk-show podcast about cars and the people who drive them.
We have a six-year track record of producing almost-weekly podcasts on any number of topics that cover car and automotive-tangential topics. Additionally, we’re the only car/automotive podcast that includes women as regular contributors for every episode we’ve published.

Over the next twelve months, The Thing About Cars (TTAC) will turn more of its effort towards video/television production.

We are looking for a Marketing / Social Media Intern to work with us. The Intern will work on a semester-long project focused on market research and developing new audience targets for The Thing About Cars. Specific tasks might include: researching potential marketing partners, reaching out to sector influencers, defining portions of marketing strategy, and implementing portions of marketing strategy (including updating social media channels and producing marketing assets if necessary).

Marketing / Social Media Intern

Who we are looking for:

  • Strong writing skills are required.
  • You are interested in some element of the automotive world.
  • You’re not afraid of Hootsuite or Buffer.
  • You’re not afraid to bring new tools and tricks to the table.
  • You are highly motivated, dependable, and like to work collaboratively with a team.
  • You bring creativity and initiative to the table, along with strong organizational skills.

What we can offer:

  • A $500 stipend is available.
  • The Thing About Cars will cooperate towards fulfilling any college course credit requirements.
  • Remote working environment with regular 1v1 meetings for the duration of the internship.
  • A host of networking opportunities.

We would love to hear from students of all majors.

If this sounds of interest:

Please Contact Us and send a note outlining your automotive interests along with a link to your resume and a writing sample (on dropbox or something similar). A phone number will help us get back to you more quickly.  Thank you!
